Credit Repair? Think Again!

Everyday as you watch the television, browse the internet, read the newspaper you encounter advertisements such as

 "Save your face - will repair your credit!"  "Erase your bad credit - click here"  "New Credit Identity, we will do it for you - legally"

All of them promises one thing - a Credit Repair! This article will explain how you can enhance your creditworthiness and will give legitimate resources.

The Fraud

Companies seek out people with negative credit histories. They will claim to make your credit report clean so you can acquire a mortgage, car loan, credit card and insurance. The truth is, they ca not! After you shell out thousands of dollars, they can not do a credit repair to improve your credit report.

Tell-Tale Signs

If you are thinking of responding to a credit repair suggestion they have, check these fictitious signs of a fraud:

 Asking for payment before they provide the service  Do not mention your legal rights and things you can do for free  Advice you not to contact credit report agencies  Suggest that you create a new you (identity) by applying for a new Employer ID number

It is a federal crime to lie on any credit application under false pretences so chances are you could be charged and prosecuted instead of the company who offered you the service.

The Reality

Even the biggest credit companies can not legally clear out any negative facts from your credit report. However, the law encourages you to ask for an investigation of details in your files that you need to dispute for FREE! Anything and everything credit repair companies can do for you, you can do for yourself at small amount or no cost at all such as:

 You can request the three credit reporting agencies - Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to provide you a copy of your credit history once a year.  You can dispute items for free as long as it is a mistake or outdated. Credit reporting agencies are responsible for correcting your information.

The Credit Repair Organizations Act

It is mandated by law that Credit Repair Organizations should give you a copy of the "Consume Credit File Rights under State and Federal Law" before signing any papers. They should also give you a contract that specifies your obligations and rights. Make sure that you carefully review the documents before signing anything.

Do not Despair

A negative credit history does not mean you would not be able to acquire a credit. Creditors have different standards. You can work out your budget by:

 Creating a budget that you can work with and commit to it  Make a repayment plan or keep track of your income and spenditures  Instead of Credit Repair companies consider going to credit counselling organizations, they are non-profit groups and can also help you solve your financial problems.

Even if you do not need a Credit Repair or do not have a poor credit history, it is best to review your credit report periodically to guard yourself from any kind of fraud.
